“Do an oral history for your family. These histories will help the next generation see what is strong and interesting about an older relative, instead of focusing on their limitations.” Kathleen Buckwalter, associate provost for health sciences, pointing out ways to show aging does not destroy a person’s inherent worth (Chicago Tribune Magazine, Dec. 16, 2001).

“We know we have a very strong probability that it will have a major effect on our bird population. We will see a lot of dead birds.” Mary Gilchrist, director of the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, expecting West Nile Virus to spread across Iowa this summer depending on weather conditions and the mosquito population (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Jan. 18).

“There will be a five-year period of time when a significant number of black films are made, then a 10-year period where one actor, like Sidney Poitier, may actually make a lot of films but other than that, there’s not much out there.” Venise Berry, associate professor of journalism, lamenting the tendency for black filmmaking to follow a cycle of feast or famine (Des Moines Register, Jan. 20).

“The burden of funding this public institution has shifted increasingly to students themselves and to outside sources.” Mary Sue Coleman, University president, explaining to attendees at the Joint Service Clubs Luncheon in Iowa City how state budget cuts force Iowa universities to lean hard on students and donors (Des Moines Register, Jan. 25).

“If you carry your pet in your SUV, you’re likely to find as much E. coli there as what they found in this study.” Nelson Moyer, public health and environmental microbiologist, raising questions about results of testing commissioned by the Iowa Grocery Industry Association in its effort to get the state’s bill on bottle and can redemption repealed (Des Moines Register, Jan. 25).

“I refuse to let the tragedies affect my work. My only action right now is silence.” David Gompper, professor of music, discussing at the conference “Infinite Respect, Enduring Dignity” his own reaction to how the art world should respond in the wake of recent events (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 27).

“Good research and good teaching go hand in hand with one another. Who better can excite and inform students than professors who are at the cutting edge of their fields?” Ed Wasserman, professor of psychology, making a pitch to state legislators about the important link between research and teaching (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 29).
