InSite: Smoother navigation at redesigned Tippie web site

If you haven’t visited the Tippie College of Business’s web site lately, you’re in for a surprise. The site, located at www.biz.uiowa.edu, has been redesigned to be both more attractive and easier to navigate.

The home page starts with some treats for frequent visitors. The main graphic is a randomly rotating photo selected from scenes inside and around the Pappajohn Business Building. Reloading the page brings a new and different image. There’s also a “highlights” area with current news about the college. And the site has its own search engine to find Tippie-related web information quickly.

The main navigation bar makes it easy to find information. It’s divided into seven main headings: students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, academic programs, and IEM. Within each category, there’s a pull-down menu of subheadings. For example, students can choose between a student portal, Blackboard, undergraduate students, MBA students, and prospective students. Users don’t even need to click to get to those lower levels of information. The subheads appear whenever the mouse rolls over the main headings.

The site also contains some expanded content, such as a calendar of business-related events, a link where alumni can access their lifetime e-mail accounts, and a business course catalog.
