UI SMART Program generates ideas that help University conserve resources, cut costs

Since its inception in late May, the Unique Ideas Save Money and Reward Thriftiness (UI SMART) Program has received almost 300 suggestions for saving money on campus, according to Pat Kenner, program coordinator. From those suggestions, 12 faculty and staff members each collected $100 for ideas that were implemented.

The winners include: Dave Weber, laborer, facilities operation—housekeeping, who suggested a new way to distribute Christmas trees in UI Hospitals and Clinics; Kristin Weber, office coordinator, IMU, for suggesting a way to make mail deliveries more efficient; Laurent Jay, assistant professor, mathematics, for a way to use timers to reduce the cost of lighting the Klotz tennis courts; Mary Schlichte, staff nurse, for a suggestion to turn off an escalator that is not in use; Ellie Herman, assistant professor (clinical), education, for suggesting a volunteer campus cleanup day; and Carolyn Norton, secretary, for suggesting a modification of the automatic openers for a handicapped entrance to the Pappajohn Business Building.

Other awards were given to: Joe Loria, account clerk, physics and astronomy; Twila Meder, secretary, Institute of Hydraulics Research; Caroline Dieterle, academic adviser; Lori Giannini, secretary, sports, health, leisure, and physical studies; Jessica Van Rooyen, secretary, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Gail Takahashi, audiologist, otolaryngology.

Approximately 20 percent of these submissions dealt with energy and electrical savings. Another 19 percent raised concerns about how information is distributed on campus, and 10 percent addressed various human resources policies. About 10 percent of the suggestions submitted concern University of Iowa Health Care.

The UI SMART Program is in conjunction with Gov. Vilsack’s Partners for Progress program. For more information about the governor’s program, go to: www.state.ia.us/government/dom/reconnectiowans/calendar.htm.
