Researcher to outline results of computer, Internet study Jeffrey Cole, director of the Center for Communication Policy, University of California-Los Angeles, will speak on "Surveying the digital future year two: The emergence of trends" at 2 p.m. April 5 in S207 Pappajohn Business Building. Cole's research team is conducting a long-term longitudinal study on the impact over time of computers, the Internet, and related technologies on families and society. The center's Internet Project is based at UCLA and is being conducted in Singapore, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Hungary, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and a growing list of additional countries. The results of the first year of the project were presented in a talk at Iowa in February 2001. Cole will explain the second year's results in the April 5 talk. The team believes that the importance and influence of computer technology and the Internet will dwarf television. The research plan draws a random and representative sample comprising users and non-users of computer technology and the Internet. Each year the project conducts an extensive survey of 2,000 households. Using standard longitudinal methods for retention, the researchers watch as non-users become users and users become more advanced and comfortable.
