IOWA winners Winners of the 2002 Improving Our Workplace Awards (IOWA) were honored at Staff Celebration Day in May. Teams Biological Sciences Interactive Web System Team (Matthew Brockman, Amy Korthank-Gabaldon). Developed an interactive web-based system that helps undergraduates in the biological sciences to plan proposed schedules each semester, sharing them with their advisers electronically. The new system leaves time for advising on career planning, course content, and research opportunities. Nominated by John Hannaford. P Card Team, Business Office, Accounts Payable, ITS (Sherry Reynolds-Miller, Sherri Dusenberg, Denise Hyche, Becky Schaffner, Brenda Ulin, Audra Haddy, Michael Alberhasky). Developed and implemented a web-based reconciliation system for employees using procurement cards for purchases. It is easier to use, saves time for customers in UI departments, and saved $25,000 in staff time for the department. Nominated by Debby Zumbach. Belin-Blank Registration Team (Jan Warren, Ed McElvain, Brian Sponcil, Susan Assouline). Initiated a cost-efficient, paperless registration system for summer programs that includes a web site with on-line registration. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Leadership Steering Committee (Jay Cayner, Ken Davenport, Stacy McGauvran-Hruby, Jane Zukin, Dan Killinger, Randall Aitchison, Linda Everett, Diana Leventry, Beth Houlahan). Spearheading a multilevel, multiyear program to improve customer service at UIHC, beginning with training for all front-line staff, and establishment of an infrastructure that allows staff to get the resources they need to deliver customer satisfaction. Laura Kastens, American studies and women's studies. Expanded outreach to the community in order to increase attendance at the American Studies Floating Friday Lecture Series and expand alumni response to department communications. Nominated by Lauren Rabinovitz. Ron Vogel, physics and astronomy. Initiated and redesigned physics lab experiments for 1,000 undergraduate students to utilize the latest technology, including apparatus of his own design. With physics and engineering students, he created more interesting exercises. Nominated by Cheryl Reardon. Susan Curtis, radiology. Initiated and developed an inventory-control system for reordering and establishing product availability, and maintains a collaborative relationship with vendors. Nominated by Janet Roe. Debra Henricks, Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum, Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Initiated and implemented several computer applications to provide timely communication for applicants and advisers across Iowa. Nominated by Catherine Solow. Dave Willis, Facilities Services Group. Initiated a pilot program to better welcome UI students and parents during the three days students move into the residence halls in the fall. Volunteers from Residence Services and FSG greeted, guided, distributed written resources, and assisted incoming students so that what is often a stressful time became a more pleasant experience.
