Old Capitol reconstruction bids to be opened in June

Now that the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, has approved design plans for Old Capitol’s reconstruction, when will the machinery roll in to begin the construction?

“Bids will be opened in June,” says Ann Smothers, director of the Old Capitol Museum.

When a bid is accepted, the project will enter Phase One of construction, which will cost an estimated $4.45 million. Completion date is set for February 2003.

The most visible aspect of Phase One will be the reconstruction of the dome, cupola, and bell tower that were destroyed in the November 2001 fire, and replacement of the asphalt shingles on the roof with a standing-seam metal roof.

Phase Two of the plan moves inside, with repairs to the building’s unique reverse spiral staircase, wooden floors, plaster walls, and other parts of the building damaged by water used to extinguish the fire.

Phase Three includes restoration of the west portico and wood trim, repointing masonry, relaying the west stairs, replacing storm windows, and general window repair. Costs of Phases Two and Three have not been determined.

Phase Four involves restoring landscape areas around the building.
