New hospital C.E.O. named

University of Iowa Health Care officials announced July 2 that Donna M. Katen-Bahensky, currently the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and Clinics of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, will be the new director and chief executive officer of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Her appointment must be approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

If the Regents approve Katen-Bahensky as the fifth C.E.O. and director, she would begin Aug. 26. She would succeed R. Edward Howell, who left in February 2002 to serve as vice president and C.E.O. at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Ann Madden Rice, chief financial officer, has served as interim director and C.E.O.

David Johnsen, dean of the College of Dentistry, and Linda Q. Everett, associate director and chief nursing officer, UIHC, chaired the search committee.

Katen-Bahensky and her husband, Jim Bahensky, have one child, Alex.
