Take it easy? No way

In the past year, 235 University employees have officially retired. Dictionary definitions claim that the word “retire” means to “conclude one’s working or professional career” and to “retreat” or “recede” or “withdraw”.

Upon hearing the plans of many Iowa retirees, including the four profiled in this issue, one might decide Webster needs to tweak those definitions. Retiring these days has little to do with kicking back, rocking in the easy chair, or escaping from society. It involves volunteering, traveling, taking up new hobbies and professions, charitable work, and even continuing to do the same work as before because it’s just too darned hard to quit cold turkey a job you love.
