Close Enough, the new faculty-staff jazz ensemble, will present a concert to benefit the UI Arts Share program at 8 p.m., Sept. 1, in Clapp Recital Hall. Management programs offered

The UI Family Care Center will offer three programs this fall:

  • SHAPEDOWN, a 10-week program for children and parents, focuses on exercise, nutrition, and behavior modification. It will run Sept. 10-Nov. 12. Cost is $300.

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an eight-week program that helps people develop skills to manage stress and chronic conditions using mindfulness meditation. There will be two fall programs: Sept. 11-Oct. 30 and Sept. 12–Oct. 31. Cost is $360.

  • Balanced Choices Adult Weight Management Program, a 12-week program based on a life-style approach to weight management, focuses on nutrition, physical activity, and a supportive environment. It will run Sept. 6– Nov. 29. Cost is $385.

Dance classes offered

The Department of Dance will be offering Saturday and weekday classes to children, students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community through the Dance Forum Program. This program offers a full range of dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, and modern, along with body conditioning.

New this session are classes during the week for young dancers interested in more intensive ballet training. These classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30pm for students ages 12 and above and from 5:30 to 6:45pm for students ages 10-12. Placement auditions will be 9:30-11am Aug. 25 in the grey studio, HH.

Fall session will meet Sept. 10-Dec. 8, with no classes during the week of Thanksgiving. Register by mail or visit E114 HH, 5-6:30pm on Sept. 6 for walk-in registration. For more information, contact Jeannine Symmonds, director of Dance Forum, at (33)5-2193.



Cancer booklet available

The Cancer Information Service in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center has released the third edition of a booklet about cancer prevention.

Cancer Prevention: What You Need to Know provides pertinent information about how to decrease the risk of developing cancer and includes a list of web sites devoted to cancer prevention.

ISU prof to discuss GMOs

The kickoff event of the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council 2001-02 year will be a talk, “The international implications to Iowa’s agricultural sector of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)” by Neil E. Harl, Iowa State University professor of agriculture. Harl will focus on the current state of genetic modification of foods and the degree of consumer acceptance worldwide.

The event will be held noon-1pm, Sept. 6 at the Congregational Church.

AUW career development award

The University of Iowa chapter of Associated University Women (AUW) invites applications for the AUW Career Development Award. The award may be used for (but is not restricted to) tuition assistance, travel expenses for a conference or professional meeting, and/or various Staff Development courses that charge a fee. AUW will present one or two awards totaling $250.

Temp housing needed

Due to a housing shortage on and off campus, many new international students will not have a place to live immediately upon their arrival to Iowa City.
