UI SMART program selects six suggestions for UI costs savings

Six University of Iowa staff members have submitted winning ideas to reduce costs at the University to the new UI SMART program. In addition to recognition, the award carries a $100 prize. These are the first awards for the program, which was initiated earlier this year. These awards were chosen from more than 200 submissions received.

  • Joe Loria, an account clerk in physics and astronomy, suggested that bills for gas cylinders be sorted by department and placed in reusable envelopes.

  • Twila Meder, a secretary III in the Iowa Institute of Hydraulics Research, suggested creating a web site checklist that would help organize all the tasks necessary for departments to move.

  • Caroline Dieterle, an adviser at the Academic Advising Center, suggested that the University stop printing advising registration forms.

  • Lori Giannini, secretary II in sports, health, leisure, and physical studies, suggested that the 25 computers in the computer lab located in the Field House be turned on only when someone is using them.

  • Jessica Van Rooyen, secretary III in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences administration, suggested that the Main Library save paper by eliminating the separator sheets between print jobs on the public printers.

  • Gail Takahashi, a senior audiologist in otolaryngology, recommended improving the delivery of packages to the hospital mail room with several pick-up sites at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for overnight delivery packages.

Since its inception in late May, the UI SMART program has received a variety of suggestions for saving money on campus, according to Pat Kenner, coordinator of the program.

The program will continue through Dec. 31. More information is available from the web site at www.uiowa.edu/~hrpersvc/worklife/SMART/form.html. This program is in conjunction with Gov. Vilsack’s Partners for Progress program. For more information about the governor’s program, see www.state.ia.us/government/dom/reconnectiowans/calendar.htm.
