WOW! 2001 activities set for new and returning students

   
   
WOW! 2001, the annual University of Iowa Weeks of Welcome event that acquaints new and returning students with UI programs, offices, resources, and campus community offerings, begins Aug. 26 and continues through Sept. 7. A complete list of the events can be found on-line at www.uiowa.edu/~wow.

Over the course of the two week program, students can take part in events designed to help them meet fellow students, faculty, and staff, and to explore community volunteer and other activities.

Some of the WOW! 2001 events include:

Aug. 26

WOW! Fireworks, viewing from Hancher Green. Fireworks launch site at City Park, approximately 8:45 p.m.

Start the year off with a bang! Grab a blanket and head to Hancher Green for the show that starts at dusk.

Aug. 31

Downtown Street Festival, downtown Iowa City, 5 to 10 p.m.

The hippest party in town takes place on the Pedestrian Mall complete with live bands, carnival rides, and other entertainment for students and families, too.

Sept. 4

Campus Colleagues Luncheon, Main Lounge, IMU, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What are faculty and staff really like when they’re out of the office or classroom? Students can enjoy a free lunch and an opportunity to find out the truth behind the myths surrounding campus colleagues.

University Lecture Committee presents Kurt Vonnegut, Main Lounge IMU, 7:30 p.m.

Don’t miss this chance to hear Kurt Vonnegut, University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop lecturer and author of Slaughterhouse-Five and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Free and open to the public.

Sept. 5

Community Services Fair, Kautz Plaza on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, 11 am. to 2 p.m.

Students can learn how to give back to the Iowa City community by donating time and talent. A wide range of service agencies will be on hand to provide students with information on how to become involved and volunteer.
