Training for activists

Training for people interested in joining Iowa Women Initiating Social Change, a volunteer group that provides training in direct action, policy work, educational campaigns, and utilizing video as a tool for social change, begins Sept. 10. The group will meet on Mondays throughout the fall semester.

Members of the group can earn one semester hour of credit through the Department of Women’s Studies. For more information or to register, call the Women’s Resource and Action Center at (33)5-1486.



Intramural league signups

Recreational Services is offering the following intramural activities for faculty, staff, and students:

  • Flag football (men’s, women’s, coed): Men need to register by Sept. 4; women by Sept. 25; and coed teams by Sept. 18.

  • Sand volleyball (coed): Register by Sept. 6.

  • Tennis (men’s singles, women’s singles, coed doubles): Register by Sept. 13.

  • Paintball (men’s and women’s): Register by Sept. 22.

Intro to InfoHawk workshops

The University Libraries will offer six Introduction to InfoHawk workshops during the fall semester. Participants will learn how to use InfoHawk, the web-based library catalog system. Basic and advanced search features will be demonstrated.

Dates and times for these hands-on workshops are 10:30-11:30am, Sept. 12; 2-3pm, Sept. 27; 9:30-10:30am, Oct. 8; noon-1pm, Oct. 23; 1:30-2:30pm, Nov. 7; and 11am-noon, Nov. 15.

To register, stop by the Information Desk, first floor, Main Library or call (33)5-5299. If fewer than six people are registered three days before class, it will be canceled.



Diabetes prevention program

People at risk for type 2 diabetes who want to prevent or delay onset of the condition may enroll in a University of Iowa Health Care exercise program that begins Sept. 18.

The eight-week program, “Reaching euglycemia and comprehensive health,” or REACH, is designed to help people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), the precursor of type 2 diabetes, to normalize their blood sugar. People with newly developed diabetes also may benefit from the program to prevent the onset of complications.

REACH, which began last year, provides counseling, expert advice, exercise evaluation, and exercise sessions. Participants attend biweekly classes. The fee is $205. For more information, call (35)6-2663.



WRAC offers support groups

The Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) will host seven discussion and support groups this fall:

  • “Eating disorders support group,” Tuesdays beginning Sept. 11;

  • “Gay men’s reading group,” beginning mid-September;

  • “Lesbian reading group,” every three weeks on Thursday evenings beginning Sept. 6;

  • “Motherless daughters,” Thursday evenings beginning Sept. 13;

  • “Scholastically challenged support group,” Monday evenings beginning Sept. 10;

  • “Songwriting practice group,” Thursdays beginning Sept. 13; and

  • “Queer women of color,” 7-8:30pm, second and fourth Tuesdays of the month beginning Sept. 11.

Dinner & Dialogue

Dinner & Dialogue, a program sponsored by the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) and the Office of Residence Services, is returning for its second year.

The first event, 5-6:30pm, Sept. 13, in Hillcrest Private Dining Room, will be a discussion in conjunction with the production of The Vagina Monologues at Hancher Auditorium. Graffiti Theatre, a local activist theater group, will present and moderate the discussion, which will offer students and community member the opportunity to discuss issues of sexuality and body image.

The cost of the meal is $6.50, though dining is not required for participation. For more information, call WRAC at (33)5-1486.
