Here’s looking at you, flyboy

This image of a drosophila (fruit fly) head, magnified 200 times using fluorescence microscopy, was created by Daniel Eberl, assistant professor of biological sciences. It’s one of the 50 images submitted to the first Art in Science contest. Sponsored by the UI’s Central Microscopy Research Facility, the contest organizers hope to encourage viewers to see the artistic value in scientific images. All entries will be displayed in the atrium of EMRB on Sept. 21, where, at a 5 p.m. reception, prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

Coleman to address University at September 25 convocation

Mary Sue Coleman

Awards for faculty and staff excellence in teaching, research, and service will highlight the annual University Convocation at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 25 in Macbride Auditorium. The convocation will be followed by a reception in Iowa Hall at the UI Museum of Natural History.

The convocation features an annual address by President Mary Sue Coleman. In this year’s address, “Sustaining the Vision: The State, the University, and the Public Trust,” Coleman will offer some thoughts on the future of the University of Iowa and public higher education in general. She also will announce the recipient of the President’s Award for Technology Innovation, which recognizes the most creative use of technology in teaching in the past year.

Amitava Bhattacharjee, president of the UI Faculty Senate, will provide opening remarks. Pat Arkema, president of the UI Staff Council, will give the closing remarks.

Jon Whitmore, provost, will present the faculty awards, assisted by the deans of the colleges and Bhattacharjee. Staff awards will be presented by Sue Buckley, interim associate vice president and director of human resources.

Awards include those for staff excellence, collegiate teaching, faculty scholarships, Regents Awards for Faculty Excellence and Staff Excellence, and the Michael J. Brody Awards for Faculty Excellence in Service.

UI United Way goal set

UI employees and retirees will be reaching for a higher purpose by setting a goal of $450,000 in giving during this fall’s United Way of Johnson County campaign.

Without the UI’s increased participation and giving, many Johnson County residents—friends, coworkers, and neighbors—may not be able to receive the help that they desperately need due to federal, state, and local budget cuts in health and human service programs. Without increased funding from United Way, some agencies will be forced to reduce staff and cut back on programs and services that they provide to our community.

United Way encourages University employees to answer the call. Pledge forms were sent in campus mail and can be returned directly to United Way. Donations also can be made using the new self-service web-page form to approve pledges for payroll deduction. It is located at hris.uiowa.edu/selfservice. This method is completely confidential and can be used in place of the paper pledge form.

Last year, UI employees, retirees, and UI Foundation staff contributed a total of $388,000 to United Way.

English department debuts film

Filmmaker Jeff Porter, lecturer in English, and collaborator Linda Bolton, assistant professor of English, will premiere the documentary Writing on Rock as the opening event of the English department Fall Lecture Series.

Writing on Rock focuses on N. Scott Momaday as both storyteller and performer. The 53-minute film explores the hybrid aesthetic at work in Momaday’s writing, tracing the way he maneuvers between two worlds—the culture of high modernism and the world of spoken stories.

The film will be shown on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. in 107 EPB and is free and open to the public. For information about future events, see the English department web page at www.uiowa.edu/~english/.

Operations Manual revisions due

The Office of the Interim Vice President for External Relations is approaching its annual Operations Manual deadline. DEOs should forward any approved policy and procedure changes to Eileen Bartos, 300 PCO, 384-0050, or eileen-bartos@uiowa.edu, no later than Sept. 30.

Though revisions to UI policy may be submitted throughout the year for immediate on-line publication (www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual), all units are asked to perform a thorough review and revision of policies on an annual basis. As a document with legal force, the Operations Manual must accurately reflect current University policy.

If you have questions about the approval process, see the Protocol for Approval of University Policies at www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/i/protocol.htm. The Offices of the General Counsel and of the Interim Vice President for External Relations also are available for facilitating policy development and review.
