InSite: Macbride Raptor Project on-line

Can’t tell a kestrel from a sharp-shinned hawk? A barred owl from a barn owl? An osprey from a merlin? Log on to the Macbride Raptor Project (MRP) web site at www.ai-design.com/stargig/ia/main.html.

Visitors to the site can learn about the many activities of MRP (a joint effort of The University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College), which rehabilitates 150 to 200 injured birds of prey each year. These include educational programs such as tours and off-site programs featuring live raptors, research on the needs of Iowa’s raptors in the wild, and opportunities to volunteer.

The site also offers learning and fun. There are photos and information on the various species of falcons, hawks, and owls that live in Iowa. It features an extensive glossary of terms about the birds. Teachers can download and print out instructional packets. And once visitors have boned up on the different types of raptors, they can take on-line quizzes and play interactive games to test their new knowledge of Iowa’s birds of prey.

The site was created by web design firm, AI-Design, which is headed by UI alumnus and former web director in the College of Education Robert Kobus. AI-Design donated its design services and continues to maintain the site at no charge.
