“It’s a time when you review everything you’re doing to make sure the experience is as safe as it can be.” Bob Bowlsby, athletics director, offering advance notice to fans that large bags will not be allowed into Kinnick Stadium for security purposes (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Sept. 20).

“It’s probably harder to prevent than the kind of terror we saw last week, it’s sad to say.” Mary Gilchrist, director of the Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, noting the ease with which a terrorist could infect a crowded sports arena with biological agents like anthrax or smallpox (The New York Times, Sept. 21).

“When you are in a quiet room, your ear is chattering away like crazy.” Jay Rubinstein, associate professor of otolaryngology and biomedical engineering, hoping that a new implant that can imitate the sound of silence will quiet the constant noise heard by sufferers of tinnitus (The New York Times, Sept. 21).

“I don’t see any other scenario than devastating.” Mary Sue Coleman, University of Iowa president, reacting to the news of a possible second round of budget cuts to the tune of $21.9 million (Des Moines Register, Sept. 21).
