“We are descendants of people who underwent untold deprivation and challenge. And we can exist, we can persevere, we can conquer all these problems, and we probably won’t experience 25 percent of what our ancestors went through.” Mary Gilchrist, director of the Hygienic Laboratory, encouraging her staff and others to look to their own inner resilience in face of the bioterrorism scare (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Oct. 13).

“I’m telling you, I don’t even want to think about what we would do without these nurses.” Linda Everett, associate director of nursing services, relying on temporary nurses to fill staffing gaps in light of the national shortage of nurses (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Oct. 14).

“This is such a small drop in the pond, and such a tiny voice. What we already have is something that’s so unbalanced that I don’t think my little documentary will even tip the scales.” Kembrew McLeod, assistant professor of communication studies, assessing the likely impact of his critical documentary Money for Nothing upon the monolithic music industry (Iowa City Gazette, Oct. 16).

“Education is not something that you can turn on and off.” Richard Hurtig, chair of speech pathology and audiology, supporting his proposal that the University’s budget be laid out in three-to-five year blocks rather than annually (Iowa City Gazette, Oct. 17).

“They’ll need a lot of artistic moxie and a lot of contacts. Given Hancher’s reputation, I’d guess there will be quite a lineup for the job.” Wallace Chappell, director of Hancher Auditorium, outlining the requirements of his successor as he leaves the University to become executive director of the American Ballet Theater in New York City (Iowa City Gazette, Oct. 18).

“You can do pretty darn well with antibiotics alone.” Charles M. Helms, professor of internal medicine, arguing against administering the nation’s short supply of anthrax vaccine to those who already have been exposed to the bacteria (The New York Times, Oct. 23).

“I think if we’re willing to accept the concept of risk, we’ll be ready.” Carol Scott-Conner, head of surgery, summing up the report she co-authored for NASA on the health implications of a three-year manned mission to Mars (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Oct. 23).
