Video conferencing discussion

The Academic Technologies Advisory Council is offering a tour and discussion of video-conferencing services, 8:30-10am, Dec. 12, S20 and S301 LC.

Internet-based video conferencing has become a readily available and easily used tool on campus. Come hear faculty and staff talk about how they use the service and where one can get access to it.

A panel discussion of instructional and research applications will follow a tour and demonstration of the facilities.



Wellness scholarships available

Staff Council will provide funding for nine partial scholarships in each of two UI Wellness programs: the Balanced Choices—Adult Weight Management Program and the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program.

The scholarships will cover half of the program fees—$192.50 for the weight management program and $180 for the stress reduction program—and will be available for the winter programs beginning in January. Only permanent faculty and staff appointed for 50 percent time or more are eligible to apply. Applications will be accepted until 5pm, Dec. 7. Scholarships will be awarded through lottery drawing on Dec. 10.

Elder care guidance

Would you like to speak to a social worker privately concerning some of your elder care responsibilities? Do you have questions about your older parent’s housing situation or health needs? Would you like to know what community resources are available to older adults?

If so, staff from Elder Services, Inc., will be on the east side of campus 1-5pm, Dec. 11, to provide one-on-one guidance, information, and referral services. Sessions of up to one hour will be available.

Pins to raise funds for RVAP

Handmade, one-of-a-kind pins are the focus of a new fundraising campaign for the Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP).

The pins, available for a donation of $13, feature women of different colors, sizes, abilities, and tastes and express the artistic nature of women’s individuality. They are available at the Women’s Resource and Action Center, Vortex, the Artist Colony Shoppe, Alternatives, Every Bloomin’ Thing, and Ruby’s Pearl.

Institutional data workshop

Information Technology Services (ITS) announces a free workshop on institutional data access, 9am-5pm, Dec. 13, in the Illinois Room, IMU.

Business officers and others who use or need to use institutional data are encouraged to attend or send representatives. Current institutional data users can benefit from updated information on current subject areas and data access solutions.

Staff Council scholarships available

Using a new lottery system, Staff Council awarded $9,500 in Coke funds for spring-semester Staff Council tuition scholarships. Out of 52 eligible applications, 28 received funding for one University class. Staff Council awards tuition scholarships each fall, spring, and summer semester.

Financial workshop

The Iowa Women’s Foundation, the Women’s Resource and Action Center, and the Iowa City Public Library will continue the 2001-02 Women and Money Series with “A year for planning wisely: Your personal finances,” 6:30-8:30pm, Jan. 24, in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

Participants will learn ways to manage and prioritize personal financial obligations. Topics include strategies for reducing personal debt, guidelines for choosing the best credit card for one’s needs, tools to help determine a reasonable payment plan, and how to develop a workable budget to help meet personal financial goals.

Social change workshop

The Women’s Resource and Action Center will continue its Social Change Training Series with “Planning and facilitating effective decision-making groups,” 6:30-9pm, Jan. 29, in the Michigan Room IMU.

The workshop will focus on teaching practical skills that assist people in making effective group decisions; providing tools to help people lead productive meetings; and clarifying positions and roles for effective group decision making.

Technology in Teaching workshops

Academic Technologies, a division of Information Technology Services that helps faculty use technology, will present several workshops for instructors and instruction support staff Jan. 7-11.

The sessions will offer hands-on practice with a variety of tools, including WebCT, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, PowerPoint, Professor’s Assistant, and web video players. There also will be introductory sessions on image analysis and molecular modeling.
