Oakdale lab space good fit for San Diego company

Ute Müh is senior scientist of San Diego-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ Department of Microbial Biology. She and fellow scientists Brian Hanzelka and Douglas Bartels are researching antibacterial therapeutics in the Multi-Tenant Facility at Oakdale.

“We’re developing new anti-infectives,” Müh says. “They’re not antibiotics. They inhibit the bacteria but might leave it alive. We’re looking for something to make an infection less virulent.

“It’s hard to imagine how we even would exist without TIC (the Technology Innovation Center),” Müh says. “We were founded by a UI microbiology professor who had received patents through the UI Research Foundation. We licensed one of the innovations.”

In order to do its research, the department must have a specific kind of laboratory. As a tenant of the Multi-Tenant Facility, the department leases a new laboratory from the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in an arrangement put together by TIC.

“Making that available to us is the most important thing that TIC has done for us,” she says.

The other advantage, she adds, is having access to research at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. E. Peter Greenberg, UI professor of microbiology, is a consultant to Vertex.
