Skorton reorganizes UI roles

President David Skorton announced last month the formulation of a search committee for a new provost as well as changes in the duties of the provost and the vice president for finance and university services.

Here is a rundown of the changes Skorton announced:

• The 19-member provost search committee will be co-chaired by James C. Torner, professor and head of epidemiology, and Kate Gfeller, F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor in the School of Music and the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. A website for the search may found at www.uiowa.edu/provostsearch.

• Both the provost and the vice president for finance and university services will be given additional duties. Also, the title of vice president for finance and university services will be changed to vice president for finance and operations and treasurer.

• The provost and vice president for finance will jointly initiate the University’s annual budget planning process, consulting with the vice presidents group, collegiate deans, the faculty and staff budget committee, and student leaders. The provost will assume oversight of Information Technology Services, with the assistance of the vice president for finance. The pair also will have critical roles as communications links with the Regents and its office on operational issues.

• Doug True, vice president for finance and university services, will continue in that position with the new title and new responsibilities. In addition to the duties to be shared with the provost, True will assist the president with Intercollegiate Athletics.
