Beginning Jan. 1, 2004, most web sites that represent the University to external audiences will be expected to meet a number of official standards created by the Office of University Relations (OUR). The standards, which are meant to improve the University’s overall web presence, relate to usability, navigation, and the correct use of the University’s established graphic identity system—the official logo and wordmark. The standards are based on the premise that visitors to virtually any public portion of the University web space should be able to: • identify each page as an official representation of the University; • identify the relative location of each page within the large and complex University structure; and • extend their interaction with the University beyond the web through e-mail, phone, and in-person contacts. OUR paid special attention to the cost and effort required to implement these standards. Web development on campus often is under funded. Also, many sites on campus were created by people no longer at the University, leaving site maintenance to those with limited training and experience. For these reasons, full compliance with all standards for public University sites will not be required until Jan. 1, 2005. For more information, see the published standards at www.uiowa.edu/graphics/web_standards.
