Marvin Bell, professor in the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Iowa's poet laureate, will read from his new poetry collection published by the UI Center for the Book on KSUI's "Know the Score" program at 5 p.m. Aug. 16. The radio show, which will be broadcast live from the Lasansky Room in the Museum of Art, also will feature other poetry readings as well as musical performances.
Names sought for disability award The Council on Disability Awareness is seeking nominations for its Achievement Award Program, which acknowledges efforts and achievements of individuals or organizations on campus for facilitating the integration and inclusion of persons with disabilities in campus life or within the community at large. Nominees should meet at least one of the following criteria: a voluntary specific effort taken to improve access for persons with disabilities; an effort demonstrating an ongoing commitment for the facilitation of access for persons with disabilities; efforts demonstrating ongoing advocacy on behalf of persons with disabilities; individual or group contributions resulting in an increase in accessibility for persons with disabilities; and individual or group contributions resulting in an increased awareness of disability issues, concerns, and needs. Submissions should be sent by Aug. 31 to Shams Ghoneim at shams-ghoneim@uiowa.edu or 1045 ML. The recipient will be announced during Martin Luther King Human Rights Week in January 2003.
Spaces are available in the NExTT (New Experiences with Technology in Teaching) workshops scheduled Aug. 12-15. The workshops, offered by Academic Technologies at Information Technology Services, offer hands-on practice with a variety of tools, including WebCT, Blackboard, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, PowerPoint, Professor's Assistant, and web video preparation. Ikarus, a work in the medium of 16mm film from 1974, is part of the exhibit Hans Breder: Enacting the Liminal Intermedia/Works 1964-2002, opening Aug. 24 at the Museum of Art. This is a retrospective of work by Breder, internationally renowned professor emeritus of art in sculpture, drawing, photography, painting, and electronic media. The show runs Aug. 24-Oct. 20, 2002.
Staff Development has teamed up with SkillSoft Corp. to offer University employees access to more than 700 web-based courses in 22 subjects ranging from software applications to leadership and organizational skills. The computer-based training is available to PC users with web access. An annual subscription-from Oct. 1, 2002, to Sept. 30, 2003-costs $98 and allows unlimited access to the courses. The Iowa Electronics Markets (IEM) opened trading July 19 in the 2002 Congressional Control Market. Contracts in this market are based on the makeup of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate resulting from the November 2002 congressional elections.
