ITS Hawk ID procedure designed to simplify

Information Technology Services (ITS), in partnership with other campus IT providers, is changing several services it offers in order to simplify the process of logging in to numerous sources of information.

Across campus, the Hawk ID and Hawk ID password will become standard means of logging in to access computing services. The Hawk ID, a unique identifier, is assigned when a new employee or student arrives on campus. Common Hawk IDs are the form first initial, last name or last name, first initial (i.e. Jane Doe’s ID might be jdoe or doej) depending on the IT provider of services. The Hawk ID will be maintained for the life of the services using it.

David L. Dobbins, assistant vice president and chief information officer, says the change will bring about two important benefits.

“It creates a better, simpler experience for users by reducing the number of different IDs and passwords they are required to use,” he says. “It also will make it easier for campus computing providers to create new services that are secure and easy to use.”

Dobbins says many people already use the Hawk ID and Hawk ID password regularly. The change will give them a chance to extend that usage to other services that will change to the system over the next few months.

Those services include:

  • Finance and University Services Application Portal (HR self-service and Workflow),

  • Access to Instructional Technology Centers (ITC),

  • Dial-in remote access to the University’s network,

  • ITS e-mail service on the University’s “blue” server,

  • WebCT and Blackboard, web-based applications used to make and host course web sites,

  • Iowa Student Information System, or ISIS, and

  • Wireless networking.
