Study abroad opportunities for faculty

The UI Office for Study Abroad invites faculty to apply for opportunities to teach or study on University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) study abroad programs. Approximately 100 UI students participate in programs administered by USAC each academic year.

Teaching abroad for summer 2005, fall 2005, and spring 2006

Qualified faculty are sought to teach academically appropriate courses in USAC study abroad programs in Chile, China, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, and Spain. Summer faculty teach one 1-3 s.h. course, while semester faculty will be asked to teach two 3 s.h. courses. Semester-long appointments require departmental approval and cover salary and airfare. Summer appointments include a stipend and airfare. Applicants must be returning to employment at The University of Iowa following the term abroad. More information and an application are available at www.uiowa.edu/~uiabroad/USACteachingannouncement2004.htm.

Faculty International Development Awards for summer 2004

Faculty and professional staff who wish to gain language proficiency or area studies exposure are invited to apply for a summer 2004 Faculty International Development Award (FIDA). The awards allow faculty to participate with U.S. undergraduates in the following USAC summer programs:

• Language: Chile, Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, Germany, China (June or July), or France (June only); or

• Area studies: Ghana or Czech Republic (June-July).

FIDAs include the cost of program tuition and a $1,500 stipend intended to cover the airline ticket and a portion of housing costs. Applicants must be returning to employment at The University of Iowa. More information and an application are available at www.uiowa.edu/~uiabroad/FIDAapplicationfor2004.htm.

The application deadline for both opportunities is Feb. 23. For more information, contact Janis Perkins, director, Office for Study Abroad, 120 IC, (33)5-0353, or janis-perkins@uiowa.edu. Further information on the USAC programs is available at http://usac.unr.edu.
