The winners of the fall 2003 Improving Our Workplace Awards (IOWA) are:

Teams

Food and Nutrition à la Carte Team (Ellen Hergert, Becky Iliff, Phil Kissack, Laurie Kroyman, Doug Robertson, James Roush). Initiated and developed the process for patients to order “room service” meals, using patient choices to form the menu. Many changes, from kitchen renovation to menu analysis to staffing hours, needed to be addressed to provide this exceptional customer service. Nominated by Joan Dolezal.

Immigration Services Team (Randall Ney, Laura Prince, Brenda Koehler). Reviewed and innovated their services to provide holistic case management to foreign nationals and UI departments, providing additional services to families of staff, an expanded array of services, and a redesigned service model. Web technology is utilized to provide services, communication, and to self-direct staff to complete documents online. Nominated by Jan Gorman.

Behavioral Risk Management Team (Teresa Kulper, Joan Rinner, Carol Wozniak-Rebhuhn, Charles Green, Brad Allison, Kevin Ward, David Bergeon, Maile Sagen, Sam Cochran, Jan Gorman). Collaborated across six departments to provide a unique proactive organizational approach to workplace conflict, hostility, and violence. The team provides central coordination for individuals and their workplaces to change negative situations. Nominated by Laura Reed.

Additional Awardees

Clerkship Evaluation Team (Diane Zumbach, Kristi Ferguson, Cathy Chavez, Pauletta Kipper, Judy Prichett, Jean Lantz). Developed the web capability for evaluations of medical students’ clerkship experience to be done online—to be requested, generated, tracked, viewed, and utilized for references. Feedback is timelier and more effective as a result of the team’s process improvement. Nominated by Suzanne Malo.

Clinical and Professional Reflecting Program Team (Christine Remmert, Melissa Adamo). Created a web application that allows medical students to schedule meetings with faculty mentors online. Student and staff time is saved. Nominated by Marian Schwabbauer.

Digital Radiograph Images Access Team (Dave Owen, Randy Ferguson, Kim Wiley, Mary Jo Duffy, Kevin Cano, Kristy Walker). Developed the capability for physicians to access digital radiographic images online. Access is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the hospital or from home, and allows images to be easily folded into presentations. Nominated by Lee Carmen.

ImageNet Conversion Team (Steve Schallau, Rick Deerburg, Ed Fischer, Jerry Gilmere, Jerry Miller, Richard Butler, Scott Stiegelmeyer, Randy Ferguson, Jim Pitcher, Jerry McAtee, Bao Nguyen). Delivered this multiphase project that reviewed, upgraded, and migrated the ImageNet infrastructure to the UIHC network without loss of performance. In addition, a stronger, ongoing working relationship between two departments now exists. Nominated by David Owen.

IT Professional Development Project Team (Suzanne Malo, Tim Shie, Jodi Scholl, Charles McBrearty, Karen Shemanski, Maureen McCormick). Formed to be a central team that coordinates University efforts to provide learning opportunities and funding options for information technology professionals across campus. Nominated by Laura Reed.
