Fly like an eagle

A bald eagle scavenges for fish along the Iowa River, near the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories. Jodeane Cancilla, director of the Macbride Raptor Project, says eagles are beginning their northbound migration to breeding grounds and often can be spotted at this time of year hunting along open water. Cancilla invites the public to see such a bird up close at the raptor center, where project staff currently are rehabilitating a golden eagle and a bald eagle. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. For more information on the Macbride Raptor Project, sponsored jointly by the University and Kirkwood Community College, visit www.macbrideraptorproject.org. Photo by Tim Schoon.

Power Plant earns kudos

The UI Power Plant is the recipient of two 2003 Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards from Gov. Tom Vilsack. The categories of the awards are “Special Recognition in Air Quality” and “Special Recognition in Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy.”

“Your efforts serve as a model for the entire state and I greatly appreciate your leadership in protecting Iowa’s environment,” Vilsack wrote in his congratulatory letter.

For information on the Power Plant’s innovative energy program that burns discarded oat hulls, see www.uiowa.edu/~fyi/issues2002_v40/07042003/biomass.html.

Committees with openings include Campus Planning, Family Issues, Financial Aid Advisory, Funded Retirement and Insurance, Hancher Auditorium, Human Rights, Information Technology, Parking and Transportation, Recreational Services, Research Council, Student Health, University Libraries, and University Safety and Security.

Terms will begin in September 2004. Applications and individual committee information is available online at www.uiowa.edu/~stafcnsl.

ACE requests due April 11

Requests for Assessing the Classroom Environment (ACE) course evaluation forms that include instructor-selected items must be received at Evaluation and Examination Service by April 11. After that date, only the standard ACE forms will be available.

Requests for printing only of department-generated course evaluation forms requires notice of at least five working days. These orders will not be filled after April 30.

IREU funds are available

The Office of the Vice President for Research seeks applicants for the Iowa Research Experiences for Undergraduates (IREU) Funding Program. Applications are due by 5 p.m., March 22, in 201 GILH.

The program’s intention is to encourage the direct involvement of undergraduate students in the scholarly/research/creative efforts of faculty. Funds provide faculty with the opportunity to enlist students of their choosing. A maximum award of $3,000 per student will be considered.

Eligible applicants include tenure-track or tenured faculty, research scientists, and research engineers. Proposals from other faculty may be considered and funded when the review committee finds that the applicant and DEO make a compelling case for research support.

More information is available at http://research.uiowa.edu/ifi.

Nominate your colleagues

Staff Council is accepting nominations for the annual University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Award and the Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award until April 9.

The UI Outstanding Staff Award recognizes staff members who have made outstanding contributions to the University, while the Regents award recognizes those staff members who have made outstanding contributions to the University and beyond—to the state, region, or nation.

Nomination instructions and forms are available on the Staff Council web site, www.uiowa.edu/~stafcnsl.

Gfeller and McGuire to be honored at annual event

Linda A. McGuire, associate dean for student affairs, College of Law, and Kate Gfeller, F. Wendell Miller Professor of Music, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, each will receive a Distinguished Achievement Award at this year’s Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women.

The University’s annual tribute to the accomplishments of all women at the University will be held from 4 to 5:45 p.m., March 30, in the IMU Main Lounge. A reception begins at 4 p.m., followed by the awards program at 4:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

In addition to the Distinguished Achievement Award, several scholarships and awards will be announced, including the Jean Y. Jew Women’s Rights Award and the Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship.

Applications sought for president’s tech award

Applications are being accepted for the seventh annual President’s Award for Technology Innovation. All members of the University community are eligible to apply for the award, which is focused on instructional technology. The cash prize is $3,000.

Projects that enhance any aspect of learning are eligible. While computer applications often form an important and significant component of innovative uses of instructional technology, the competition is not limited to the application of computer technology.

For more information or to obtain an application form, visit the Council on Teaching web site at www.uiowa.edu/~cot. Completed applications should be sent to the Council on Teaching, 111 JH, by April 12. Questions may be directed to Gene Parkin at gene-parkin@uiowa.edu or to David Wynes at david-wynes@uiowa.edu.

Foundation sees record numbers

In 2003 the UI Foundation received gifts from more than 62,000 contributors, a record number in the foundation’s 48-year history.

Outright gifts totaled $62.4 million, the fourth highest total in history. The 105,173 gifts marked the second-highest total. Deferred-giving expectancies through means such as wills and trusts came to $48.9 million, a 39.1 percent increase over 2002. When outright gifts and future commitments, including pledges to be paid in future years, are combined, the foundation’s total fund-raising productivity reached $126.3 million, the third-highest amount ever recorded.

Nearly 60 percent of the 2003 outright gifts went toward program support (including research), 15.6 percent went toward student support (including scholarships), 18.2 percent supported facilities improvements, and 8.6 percent was given for faculty support (including endowed chairs and professorships).

More details and annual highlights are online at www.uiowafoundation.org/about/statistics.
