Hone your English skills
The Department of Linguistics’ English as
a Second Language Program will offer a course designed
to improve the listening and speaking skills of international
professionals visiting or working at the University
and their ability to take part in discussions or
give presentations in English.
The class, Iowa Intensive English (IIE) Communication
Skills for Professionals, is scheduled from 2-2:50
pm, Monday-Friday, May 24-July 16.

Info arcade class sign-ups
The Main Library’s Information Arcade Electronic
Classroom is available to be reserved for spring
semester 2005. Priority will be given to instructors
who submit requests before June 1.
The classroom features 24 networked student workstations,
each with access to either the MacOSX or Windows
XP environments. Pentium 4 computers are available
at each student desk, alongside a PowerMac G4.
Various levels of staff support are available to

Tuition award for staff
Staff members who wish to begin or continue their
undergraduate education can apply for funding support
from the Robert F. Ray Staff Scholarship offered
through the Division of Continuing Education.
Applicants must be at least 25 years of age; employed
by the University at least half-time (for at least
one year from the date of application); classified
as office and clerical, service, technical, or P&S;
and must remain employed at the University during
the award period.
Recipients will be awarded $1,500 to cover the cost
of educational expenses for up to 9 semester hours
at Iowa over the course of one year.

Free talk on osteoporosis Janet Schlecte, professor of internal medicine,
will present a free educational seminar on osteoporosis
from 6:30-8 pm, May 18, in the Holiday Inn Conference
Center, 1220 First Ave., Coralville.
Osteoporosis is called the silent disease because
it has no symptoms until a sudden strain, bump, or
fall causes a bone fracture. More than 10 million
Americans have osteoporosis.

Kite
Runner chosen for book project
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini has been selected
for the fourth annual Johnson County Reads program,
sponsored by the UI Center for Human Rights.
The Kite Runner is an epic tale of fathers and sons,
friendship and betrayal, that takes readers from
Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to
the atrocities of the present. Many public discussions
will be scheduled during the project, Sept. 19-Nov.
13, at a number of different locations. Teachers,
librarians, book groups, and others are encouraged
to participate. Questions will be available online
at www.uichr.org at the start of the 2004-05 academic
year.

New group for military friends, family
A new organization designed to provide support for
students and community members who have friends and
family serving in the military has been formed.
The group, UI Students with Friends in the Military,
meets every Thursday evening at varied locations.
Speakers have been scheduled to address such topics
as resources available in the community, how to handle
life changes, and strategies for coping. A scrapbooking
event and casual socials also are planned.
