Does that Elvis Herky get you all shook
up? Or are you more attracted to the billowing skirt of Marilyn
MonHerky?
Maybe Harry Caray Herky’s glasses make you
cackle and yell, “Holy Cow!”
Picking a favorite statue from Herky on Parade,
to many, might be as unthinkable as choosing a favorite
child. We understand the angst. We empathize with
your plight.
But do it anyway. You might win a prize.
The fyi staff ask you to vote for your favorite
of the 75 Herkys displayed throughout the Iowa City/Coralville
area in celebration of Kinnick Stadium’s 75th
anniversary. You can hop online at www.herkyonparade.com and view photos of each or grab a map from assorted
downtown businesses (or print one from the web site)
and visit each one in person.
Then send a note telling us your favorite Herky,
and why, and you’ll be entered into a drawing
for tickets to the throwback football game on Sept.
4, when Iowa plays Kent State at historic Kinnick.
We’re also asking for some creative discussion
about what themed Herky you would have liked to have
seen as part of the parade, if you had been designing
one yourself. Perhaps you envisioned a TV9 Pinpoint
Doppler Radar Denny Frary Herky, complete with a
cold front sliding down from his beak and cirrus
clouds floating across his feathers. Or maybe you
wished for a President David Skorton Herky, featuring
a stethoscope and saxophone.
Send your votes and your Herky-wanna-be notes to
fyi associate editor Amy Schoon, amy-schoon@uiowa.edu or 300 PCO–Suite 370. Include your full name,
department, and campus phone number. We’ll
reveal the results in an upcoming issue.
