“The whole world does science...[people from different countries] bring different ways to communicate and different ideas.” Kevin Campbell, UI Foundation Distinguished Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, discussing why he employs in his lab scientists from around the world (Iowa City Press-Citizen, July 20).

“Most immunologists...think of platelets as these little things that induce coagulation. It will take time for them to realize the importance of platelets in modulating adaptive immunity.” Timothy L. Ratliff, Anderson-Hebbein Professor of Prostate Cancer Research, suggesting that platelets play a role in stimulating the human immune system (Science News, July 26).

“Racing is a kind of art that has many of the demands surgery has. You have to get on the edge. If you’re not striving for excellence, you’re wasting your time.” Al Cram, professor of surgery, comparing his two great pursuits—plastic surgery and auto racing (Iowa City Press-Citizen, July 26).

“I can create a better pool of students when interns are paid.” David C. Kelzenberg, internship coordinator in the Career Center, reporting that most of his students pursue paid internships, especially in a weakened economy (The Christian Science Monitor, July 29).

“In polls, everyone is always trying to get a random sample. The last thing we want is a random sample. We want the best and the brightest traders.” George Neumann, George Daly Professor of Economics, explaining the ins and outs of the Iowa Electronic Markets—which received publicity after the Pentagon nixed plans for a futures market that would predict terrorist acts (NPR’s Morning Edition, July 30).

“A woman could be sufficiently depressed that she would hold the belief that her child was better off dead than alive, and this was a positive thing.” Michael O’Hara, professor of psychology, commenting on postpartum depression (Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Aug. 11).

“Very little seems to be known about it from the teacher standpoint. Most teachers aren’t trained to recognize that it can be a health or medical problem.” Christopher Cooper, associate professor of urology, referring to voiding accidents or other urination problems in children and encouraging teachers to become better educated on the subject (WCVB-TV Boston, Aug. 11).

“Last year’s action movie hero can be forgotten, but once you’re a governor, you’re always a governor.” Bluford Adams, associate professor of English, offering his take on celebrity politicians such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is running in the California gubernatorial recall election (The Christian Science Monitor, Aug. 12).

“Often, the perception is that Iowa is a cultural wasteland.” Judith Hurtig, codirector of Hancher Auditorium, touting Hancher to visitors as one of the state’s many sophisticated cultural offerings (The Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 15).
