New MR center opens

The Department of Radiology in the Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics has opened a Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging Center at UI Family Care–Southeast Iowa City, 1130 Scott Blvd.

The new service complements existing MR services at UI Hospitals and Clinics by offering MR imaging in an outpatient setting. The MR unit at the new clinic is a state-of-the-art, high-resolution, 1.5 Tesla magnet system, capable of performing a variety of MR imaging studies. Its new location enhances patient convenience and expert interpretation by UI subspecialty radiologists.

Center hours are 7:30am-5pm, Monday through Friday. To make an appointment, call (38)4-9799.

Traffic detour by Field House

A construction project has closed the northbound lane of a portion of South Grand Avenue between the Field House and Melrose Avenue through mid-August. Southbound traffic will be routed to the northbound lanes while the new southbound lanes are being constructed. No northbound traffic will be allowed.

During construction, traffic for the Pharmacy Building, west campus residence halls, and the Field House will be detoured east to Byington Road and then north on Grand Avenue.
Construction will be completed by mid-August and open for traffic before the fall semester. The project will provide turning lanes for traffic into the new Melrose Parking Facility and turning lanes for traffic onto Melrose.

UI blood center needs donors

The DeGowin Blood Center needs blood or platelets donations in the days immediately before and after the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. The supply of available blood products often runs low during long holiday weekends, so donors are needed to ensure that the UI hospital’s blood supply is adequately stocked to meet patient need.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be free of cold and flu symptoms for at least five days prior to donation. Anyone who donates before Aug. 31 will receive a free “Iowa Blood Donor” T-shirt.

To make an appointment, call (35)6-2058. More information is available at www.uihealthcare.com/bloodcenter.
