The number of minority students enrolled at the
University of Iowa has increased for the fall 2004
semester. The percentage of minority undergraduate
students remained the same, with all of the increases
seen in graduate and professional students, according
to a report prepared for the Board of Regents, State
of Iowa.
Total minority enrollment for fall 2004 is 2,665,
up 64 students from last fall’s total of 2,601.
Although the percentage is the same as last year’s,
undergraduate minority enrollment dipped slightly
from last year’s record total of 1,717 to 1,702,
a decrease of 15. The number of minority graduate
students increased to 486, up 57 from last year’s
total of 429. The number of minority professional
students also increased, from 455 in 2003 to 477
in 2004, up 22 students.
“We’re very pleased that we’re
continuing to increase enrollment of minority students,” says
UI President David Skorton, “and pleased to
see the increase in this year’s enrollment
of African American students. But we still have some
distance to go before we’re where we want to
be, and we will continue to work hard toward the
goals we and the Regents have set for Iowa.”
