Center ready to help teens, parents through holidays

The holidays can be stressful, especially for teenagers dealing with substance abuse or mental health issues. Help is available, for both teenagers and their families, from the University of Iowa Adolescent Health and Resource Center.

The center’s social workers, counselors, and physician offer help in-person and online all year long, besides helping teenagers deal with the holidays, according to Mary Larew, the center’s medical director and associate professor (clinical) of pediatrics in the Carver College of Medicine.

The center, at 509 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City, helps teens with substance abuse or mental health problems or concerns. Interested individuals may call (38)4-0847 to make an appointment or check on eligibility.

Teens and parents can visit the “Ask a Professional” feature on the center’s web site to ask for expert advice about nonemergency concerns. The web site is listed under the center’s name at www.medicine.uiowa.edu/isciowa.

Teens also can call the center —about nonemergency concerns—from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays with any question.

For emergencies and matters of crisis, however, individuals should dial 911, or contact the Crisis Center in Iowa City at 351-0140.
