In November, University
of Iowa campus police began carrying portable defibrillators
while on patrol, according to Charles Green, UI assistant
vice president and director of public safety.
The UI police department bought four Medtronic
Lifepak 500s, known among first-responders as automated
extended
defibrillators
Rugged but lightweight, the devices apply
an electric shock to restore the rhythm of an irregularly
beating
heart. They come with automated prompts to guide
responders in using the defibrillators.
