March 12, MondayThe Financial Services Industry—noon–1 p.m. or 5:30–6:30 p.m.—Understand how various financial advisors are compensated and how that will impact you. Learn the questions that must be asked of any financial advisor. Register by March 5. March 13, TuesdayFinancial Well-Being: What Every Woman Should Know—noon–1 p.m.—The National Center for Women and Retirement Research estimates that 80 to 90 percent of women will be in complete control of their finances at some point in their lives. As a woman, are you financially confident? Attend this class to learn how to take control of your financial future. Understand how to meet the financial challenges of divorce or widowhood, understand financial information and terms, consider investment strategies, understand your risk tolerance, and learn tips for reducing taxes. Register by March 6. March 19, MondayAdvanced: University Leave Policies—10 a.m.–noon—Covers in-depth knowledge of complex situations involving University leave policy and procedures. Recommended for Unit HR and Senior HR Representatives as well as other employees with supervisory or HR responsibilities. Only for University faculty and staff who have attended “The Basics: University Leave Policies” or a regular University Leave course (HR Fundamentals; University Leaves; FMLA, WC, ADA, LOA Maze) or a specific department session held within the past 12 months. March 20, TuesdayProTrav Training—1:30–3 p.m.—This course will provide departmental staff instruction on reconciling their UI Procurement card, as well as obtaining out-of-pocket reimbursement for travel that has been done on behalf of the University using the online application. This class will train the user on the functionality of the ProTrav application and participants will have an understanding of the concept of One Tool, One Location, One Source. Register by March 13. March 21, WednesdayThe UI Anti-Harassment Policy—10–11 a.m.—Harassment of any member of the University community is prohibited. The purpose of the Anti-Harassment Policy is to prevent harassment within the University community and to provide a process for addressing harassment if and when it does occur. Register by March 14. March 22, ThursdayProcurement Card Training—9–11 a.m.—See course description for March 7. Register by March 15. A Cross-Cultural Meet & Greet: First Impressions Last—10 a.m.–noon—This workshop will examine “typical” daily cultural practices in specific contexts, for example: how do proper greetings vary, how are names constructed and pronounced, what rules and etiquette might we want to consider regarding food, eating, gifts, how might business and professional relationships vary, etc. A variety of specific countries/culture groups will participate. This will be a light, fun and informal session to help us encourage our international guests to feel comfortable and welcome. Register by March 15. Individual Retirement Accounts—noon–1 p.m. or 5:30–6:30 p.m.—Learn how to escape taxes on your retirement savings. This class reviews the tax advantages of traditional and Roth IRAs. This class also reviews different investment options available within IRAs, as well as guidelines for contributions and disbursements. Register by March 15. March 26, MondayYour Future Financial Game Plan—noon–1 p.m.—This educational workshop will present ideas that can be implemented to improve your financial future. Topics include portfolio investing, Group Supplemental Retirement Annuities, and planning for retirement. Register by March 19. Online Services from TIAA-CREF—noon–1 p.m.—Online services from TIAA-CREF provides a general overview of the online services that you have access to. This includes how to: find account balances, update personal information, review retirement illustrations, review/change investment allocations, get financial performance updates, access market news, and retrieve product information. Interviewing at the University (Part II): Merit Employment Procedures—1–4:30 p.m.—This course provides information to those involved in interviewing and hiring merit system job applicants, emphasizing the “paper trail” which is part of the process. Register by March 20. Procure to Pay Training—1–4 p.m.—This course provides an overview of the order and payment processes. Attendees will learn to complete an online Purchase Requisition (PReq) to outside vendors and will develop a better understanding of the various voucher types. You will also learn how to obtain information from the Accounts Payable/Purchasing web pages and PReq system. Register by March 20. March 28, WednesdayJobs @ Iowa—10 a.m.–noon—Learn about the recent electronic employment application (Jobs @ UIOWA) that incorporates all aspects of filling a professional and scientific (P&S) vacancy from requisition, through the search, to the point of hire, including complete interaction with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity search processes. This new process significantly impacts how applicants apply for P&S positions at The University of Iowa and how search committees manage the search process. Register by March 21. March 29, ThursdayThe J-1 Scholar: Philosophy, Policies & Procedures—10 a.m.–noon—An in-depth look at the J exchange visitor program to guide departments in: deciding if J status is appropriate for a potential scholar; submitting an accurate International Scholar Application Form; and following up with a scholar both pre-departure and upon arrival on campus. The goal is to develop a general understanding of J exchange visitor program and J immigration regulations as well as some of the common challenges in hosting a J exchange visitor.
