Learning and Development

Registration Information: Log onto the UI Human Resources Self Service site at https://hris.uiowa.edu/portal/index.php and click the “My Training” link to register for any available session.

This tool will let you see the status and location of a class, get e-mail confirmations, withdraw from a class, check your course registration history, and even do online evaluations. Courses with a fee (Special Events, 7 Habits, Reframing Your Work) will still use the printable registration form.

May 14, Monday

Developing an Asset Allocation Strategynoon–1 p.m.—This course reviews the various forms of investor risks and primary concepts, covers diversification among the different asset classes, and a review of the fundamentals of asset allocation. Register by May 7.

May 15, Tuesday

ProTrav Training10:30 a.m.–noon—This course will provide departmental staff instruction on reconciling their UI Procurement card, as well as obtaining out-of-pocket reimbursement for travel that has been done on behalf of the University using the online application. This class will train the user on the functionality of the ProTrav application, and participants will have an understanding of the concept of One Tool, One Location, One Source. Register by May 8.

Investment Planning: What Does Diversification Really Mean?noon–1 p.m. or 5:30–6:30 p.m.—This course reviews the various forms of investor risks and primary concepts, covers diversification among the different asset classes, and a review of the fundamentals of asset allocation. Register by May 8.

Using Progressive Discipline1–3 p.m.—Learn The University of Iowa’s position on the recommended use of progressive discipline. The seven steps of just cause will be reviewed as well as the steps for progressive discipline, including when it would be appropriate for supervisors to discipline staff. Register by May 8.

May 16, Wednesday

Demo of Learning Online with SkillSoft and My Training–Self Service10:30 a.m.noon—This session will help you or your new staff learn about the Self Service registration resource "My Training." We will have an overview of the site, including access, registration, canceling, wait list, notification, and credit. There are thousands of classes available, the system is easily accessible, and this resource is useful in lots of ways at work and at home. Register by May 9.

Eye on Iowa: Levitt Center Tour12:05–12:55 p.m.—Join us for a tour of the Levitt Center for University Advancement. Register by May 9.

May 17, Thursday

Saving Departmental Expenses with Print, Digital and Mail Services10–11 a.m.—Having budget woes? Want to save your department money? Plan on attending this class. Information will be presented on opportunities to save money on your department’s printing and mailing expenses. Register by May 10.

May 18, Friday

What You Need to Know When Addressing Depression in the Workplace1:30–3:30 p.m.—Clinical depression has become one of America’s most costly illnesses. Left untreated, depression is as costly as heart disease, costing more than $54 billion in absenteeism from work, lost productivity, and direct treatment costs. With early recognition, intervention, and support, most employees can overcome clinical depression and pick up where they left off. In this course, you will find out how to recognize depression and what you can do about it as a supervisor. Register by May 11.

May 22, Tuesday

Everything You Wanted to Know About the 2007 Postal Service Rate Increase...And You Better Know!10–11 a.m.—The 2007 postal rate increase will make some of the most comprehensive changes in postal history. The U.S. Postal Service will be moving away from the traditional weight-based postage system and shift to a “dimensional” size initiative. These changes will cause significant increases to mailers already on tight mailing budgets. This class will provide you with important information on the changes and how they will affect your mailings. Register by May 15.

The Active Office: Office Stretches12:15–12:45 p.m.—Looking for ways to energize the workday without taking a lot of time or space? This course includes stretches from the head to the toes, for both activity and stress reduction purposes. Stretches are low impact and require no equipment. After participating in this course, individuals should feel comfortable with stretching at work or at home, knowing what they are stretching and the importance of stretching. Enjoy participating in the exercises during the demonstration. Register by May 15.

May 24, Thursday

ProTrav Administrator and Upper Level Users Training9–10:30 a.m.—The accounts payable, travel, and purchasing departments would like to make you aware of the upper level role that is available in ProTrav for administrative users. This role allows users to review procurement card or travel related expenses at an organizational or departmental level. It is intended to facilitate the review, oversight, and reporting of these expenses. Individuals who may benefit from this role include deans, directors, department heads, and faculty/staff, support staff, or other supervisory staff who have account or budgetary responsibility. Register by May 17.

Responding to Stress in the Workplacenoon–1 p.m.—This 60-minute seminar will include a stress assessment, definitions and symptoms of stress, and ways to take action. Explore a new stress angle: “Your Emotional Response.” A brochure entitled, “How to Handle Stress at Work” will be provided. Find out what other employees do to measure their stress and identify one new way to reduce your own stress response. You will have the opportunity to assess your stress level and practice stress reducing techniques. Register by May 17.

Retirement Planningnoon–1 p.m. or 5–6 p.m.—Preparing financially for retirement is an ongoing and somewhat overwhelming process. This course will equip you with the knowledge you need to make this task more manageable. You'll learn how to determine your financial goals and develop a strategy to ensure a comfortable retirement. Register by May 17.

Professional & Scientific Reclassification Process2:30–3:30 p.m.—If you would like to learn about the professional and scientific reclassification process, such as its philosophy, procedures, necessary forms, and appeal process, then sign up for this course. It will be an overview of the entire process. Register by May 17.

May 29, Tuesday

The Active Office: Strength Training with Bands12:15–12:45 p.m.—Looking for ways to energize the workday without taking a lot of time or space? Using strength training bands is a great way to increase strength with no bulky, heavy equipment. They provide a range of intensities for most muscle groups. Bands are great for travel, desk storgage, or to keep in the car between events. Participants in this course will understand how to safely use bands to strengthen the entire body. Enjoy participating in the exercises during the demonstration. Register by May 22.

May 31, Thursday

Effective People Skills8:30 a.m.–noon—Building a trusting environment is the foundation of effective communication with others. Learn to strengthen your own behavioral awareness, enhance interpersonal communication skills, and acquire tools to increase your assertiveness. Register by May 24.

The Active Office: Office Exercise–No Equipment Necessary12:15–12:45 p.m.—Looking for ways to energize the workday without taking a lot of time or space? Strength training doesn’t need to be done in a gym or with lots of equipment. This feature shows individuals how to use their body as a weight for all intensities and abilities. Participants in this course will leave with the knowledge of how to strengthen the entire body in 15 minutes with no equipment, and can be done right in the office. Enjoy participating in the exercises during the demonstration. Register by May 24.
