“IQ is typically a very stable trait.”

Ruth Spinks, assistant research scientist in the Department of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine, referring to a study that shows a strong correlation between results of elementary school achievement tests and results of IQ tests administered in adulthood (Live Science, April 16).

“When I came here in the early ’90s, his aura was still very much over the program because he was such a strong voice in American literature and he loved Iowa City so much.”

Lan Samantha Chang, director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, speaking about onetime Writers’ Workshop faculty member and esteemed author Kurt Vonnegut, who died April 11 at the age of 84 (The [Cedar Rapids] Gazette, April 12).

“The NCAA is rightly concerned about sports betting. But there are clearly people here who think gambling as a whole is immoral and goes against the code of ethics. I don’t share that opinion.”

John Solow, associate professor of economics in the Tippie College of Business, saying that cutting all University ties to the state lottery would be an excessive reaction to a recent lottery commercial that included the Tiger Hawk insignia and a parody of the University’s fight song (Inside Higher Ed, April 9).

“I felt like I had a good job. I would not have left there unless it was a unique and special opportunity. This is a special, special place.”

Todd Lickliter, men’s basketball coach, on his decision to leave his coaching position with Butler University to become The University of Iowa’s new coach (The [Cedar Rapids] Gazette, April 4).

“What we’re trying to do is come up with a set of uniform rules that will encourage more donations. The death of any donor is always unfortunate, but the question is, can some good come from it?”

Sheldon Kurtz, professor of law, on the revisions crafted by Kurtz and other Commissioners on Uniform State Laws to the Revised Uniform Anatomical Act. The updates reflect medical advances and clarify ambiguities that hinder organ donation. (Washington Post, April 4)
