“(Gary Barta) has the qualities it takes to improve on an athletics program that is already considered one of the nation's best.”

Gary Fethke, UI interim president, speaking about new UI athletic director Gary Barta, a Midwest native who previously held the same post at the University of Wyoming. Barta will replace Bob Bowlsby, who now will direct Stanford University’s athletic program (SI.com, June 23).

“The public may not know all the ins and outs of the (Ned) Lamont candidacy, even in Connecticut, but among people who follow the Democratic Party, this race is a big deal nationally.”

Peverill Squire, political science, suggesting that Connecticut’s U.S. Senate primary between Sen. Joseph Lieberman and Ned Lamont might determine if the left or the center has more influence in the national Democratic Party (Hartford Courant, June 20).

“We’d be letting children down by not doing this.”

Jeffrey Murray, pediatrics, pediatric dentistry, and biological sciences, stressing that having a large children’s DNA bank, aka “biobank,” is necessary and could be maintained ethically and safely (Science, June 16).

“There are probably individuals in the population who, back when worms were prevalent, were the healthiest because their immune systems could fight off all sorts of things.”

David Elliott, gastroenterology, commenting on the potential benefits of the presence of parasitic worms in the body (Detroit News, June 11).
