In BriefWater, water everywhere... and a lot to talk about Entrepreneurial center lines up speakers and workshops Instructional Improvement Award proposals due Former surgeon general to speak Call for Improving Our Workplace Award nominations Water, water everywhere… and a lot to talk aboutIn a three-day collaboration this month between the arts and the sciences, The University of Iowa will hold a symposium on water problems. The Mississippi River Symposium will run Oct. 28–30 in the University’s new Art Building West, and in the Grand Harbor Resort on the Mississippi River in Dubuque. The symposium brings together authors, scholars, and researchers from many disciplines and backgrounds, not only from around campus but also from across the country and even around the world, to discuss “thoughtful remedies” for “present-day water uses,” according to a joint statement from Meredith Hay, UI vice president for research, and Christopher Merrill, director of the University’s International Writing Program. A collection of published essays could emerge from the symposium, according to Hay and Merrill, whose offices organized the symposium. Admission to the symposium is by invitation only, but the public is invited to two events:

Instructional Improvement Award proposals dueThe University’s Council on Teaching is now accepting proposals from faculty and staff for special funding to support instructional initiatives that will make exceptional and specific contributions to learning. These awards ordinarily do not exceed a funding level of $5,000. Depending on available funds and the proposal pool, some proposals may receive partial funding; therefore, applicants must clearly prioritize the most essential budgetary elements of the proposal. For more information and to obtain an application form, please refer to http://www.uiowa.edu/~cot/. Applications must be received by Nov. 8. Former surgeon general to speakM. Joycelyn Elders, former surgeon general under the Clinton administration, will provide the keynote address, “Healthcare in the 21st Century,” at the Woodrow Morris Lectureship, Nov. 9, from 7:30-9 p.m., in the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Elders’ address will examine the lack of health care accessibility in the United States, the burden placed on society by unhealthy behaviors, and strategies our country must devise to make America’s health status fit our health care expenditure. Free and open to the public, this event is part of the two-day Long Term Care Conference, presented by the College of Nursing’s Adult and Gerontology Area of Study, the Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center, and the John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. Philanthropy in cyberspaceSince launching its online giving program in 2000, the University of Iowa Foundation has cultivated a culture of philanthropy in cyberspace, finding success that ranks among the best in the Big Ten Conference and the nation as a whole. According to a 2006 Chronicle of Philanthropy survey, The University of Iowa ranked 12th in the nation in online giving results, and second only to Pennsylvania State University among Big Ten universities. Iowa’s program (www.givetoiowa.org) brought in nearly $1.65 million this past year, a huge increase from just five years ago, when the online program solicited just shy of $43,000. With the ease and convenience of online giving, the University has seen tremendous growth in first-time donors. “The online program has been an effective way to reestablish relationships with the University,” says Hilery Livengood, director of web strategies at the UI Foundation. The UI community can benefit from the foundation’s success—online giving pages can be built for any unit on campus with gift fund accounts at the foundation. Communications staff members in the foundation can help with page development based on the desired strategy or end goal in mind. In addition, foundation development staff can help units devise appropriate solicitation strategies. “The foundation’s site allows people to make informed philanthropic decisions,” Livengood says. “UI units can select what funds to list on their pages, and donors can identify the needs and desired outcomes.” Call for Improving Our Workplace Award nominationsDo you know a staff member or a team whose efforts have made a lasting difference at the University?
