Chamber music?

Old Capitol recently welcomed its newest museum object, an 1878 Steinway grand piano. UI Facilities Management workers dismantled a second-floor window and hoisted the 9-foot piano into the Senate Chamber. The piano will be used at events, concerts, and recitals. A matter of degreehonorary, that is

The last time anyone received an honorary degree from The University of Iowa was about 25 years ago. The honoree was Willard “Sandy” Boyd, and soon other accomplished individuals will have the chance to join the former UI president in that distinction. The University of Iowa will start conferring new honorary degrees in May 2007.

Degrees may be conferred upon individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary and sustained achievements in such areas as research, scholarship, education, artistic creation, social activism, human rights, humanitarian outreach, or other endeavors consistent with the values of The University of Iowa.

Nominations may come from colleges or from individual faculty members. If a nomination comes from an individual, the Honorary Degree Selection Committee will consult with the appropriate faculty before recommending any nominee for an honorary degree.

Nomination statements should not exceed two pages outlining the nominee’s achievements. They can be made by either letter or statement forwarded to Evalyn Van Allen-Shalash, Faculty Senate Office, 604 Jefferson Building, Iowa City, IA 52242, or submitted online at www.uiowa.edu/~honorary/nomination-form/index.html.

A nomination statement should specifically address these areas:

  • Area of nominee’s achievement
  • Nature of nominee’s achievement
  • How the nominee’s achievements are “extraordinary” and “sustained” over an entire career—the degree should not be seen as a way to honor a single achievement
  • Any additional information about the nominee that might be important in the nomination process

The deadline for nominations is Dec. 1. For more information on the honorary degree policy, visit www.uiowa.edu/~honorary/policy/index.html.

Time to review your benefits package

Open enrollment is in full swing for all benefits-eligible employees. Open enrollment runs through Nov. 13 for merit staff, and through Nov. 17 for faculty, professional and scientific, and merit supervisory exempt staff.

Merit employees have major changes to State of Iowa health insurance options for 2007. John Deere and Coventry plans have been eliminated; if you had these plans, you must choose a new plan. Three new plans are now offered: UnitedHealthcare has been added as a provider and is offering two new plans; and Wellmark has added a new plan called Blue Access. Blue Advantage, Program III Plus, and Iowa Select are still offered.

Faculty, professional and scientific, and merit supervisory exempt employees have changes to flex credits and many insurance plan premiums to examine.

All faculty and staff may enroll, change their contribution amount, or withdraw from the flexible spending accounts during open enrollment.

The UI Benefits office is presenting a number of short informational meetings about the changes for 2007. There are also a number of longer educational meetings aimed at making sure you make the best use of your benefits. For schedules of the informational meetings and detailed information about open enrollment, visit the Benefits Office website: www.uiowa.edu/hr/benefits/index.html.

Submit Operations Manual revisions by Dec. 11

The Operations Manual (http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual) is a compilation
of policies that have been approved by the UI president. It is the University's official statement of policy. Because the manual has legal force, it is critical that it accurately reflect current policy.

While approved revisions may be submitted throughout the year for immediate publication, DEOs who received the Oct. 30 memorandum and update form should perform this annual review of all policies and procedures in their area of responsibility. Changes should be sent no later than Dec. 11, 2006, to Eileen Bartos, University Relations, 300 PCO, 384-0050, or eileen-bartos@uiowa.edu.

We also invite your assistance in assuring that policies in the manual are linked, as appropriate, to web sites containing relevant supplementary departmental or unit procedures. For instance, V-4.1 Receipt of Funds includes a link to detailed cash handling policies and procedures. Many such links are already in place, but please send additional links that would be helpful.

For information about the approval process, see the Protocol for Approval of
University Policies at www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/i/protocol.htm. The Offices of the General Counsel and of the Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations also are available to assist with policy development and review. If you have questions, please contact Eileen Bartos (300 PCO, (38)4-0050, eileen-bartos@uiowa.edu) or Gerhild Krapf (4 JH, (33)5-1886, gerhild-krapf@uiowa.edu).

Human Resources to review Working at IOWA survey results with deans and vice-presidents

Susan Johnson, associate provost, and Sue Buckley, associate vice president of finance and operations and director of human resources, are meeting throughout the semester with all UI deans and vice presidents to review survey results specific to their college or division. Each dean and vice president also will be asked to develop a plan to act on the findings and to share the findings with their faculty and staff members.

After deciding how results can best be used, the colleges and divisions are to select one or two meaningful and manageable goals and to communicate those goals to Central Human Resources so best approaches can be identified and shared throughout campus. Twice a year follow-up will be done by Central Human Resources to identify progress towards the goals. After the first of the year, faculty and staff interested in finding out more can contact their human resources representative or senior human resources representative.

The Working at IOWA survey, disseminated April 2006, asked faculty and staff how they experience their work environment. To read the full report and recommendations, visit the Working at IOWA web site at http://www.uiowa.edu/hr/working/index.html.
