Registration Information: Log onto the UI Human Resources Self Service site at https://hris.uiowa.edu/portal/index.php and click the “My Training” link to register for any available session.

This tool will let you see the status and location of a class, get e-mail confirmations, withdraw from a class, check your course registration history, and even do online evaluations. Courses with a fee (Special Events, 7 Habits, Reframing Your Work) will still use the printable registration form.

Nov. 28, Tuesday

Overview of HR Reports, Query Tools and Data—10 a.m.–noon—From standard HR reports to an online query tool, this course will give an overview of HR data/standard report recommendations and how to use this data to analyze/review your workforce. Register by Nov. 22.

Nov. 29, Wednesday

Coming to Iowa: Women's Perspectives and Experiences—10 a.m.–noon—Female international students, scholars, and spouses come to The University of Iowa with a wide variety of cultural perspectives and experiences and face unique challenges and opportunities while they are here. This session will focus on the perspectives and experiences of women coming from East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East, and will include information on the perspectives and values they bring with them, as well as how they experience life here on the UI campus and in the surrounding community. Register by Nov. 22.

Nov. 30, Thursday

Mutual Fund Basics—noon–1 p.m. or 5:30–7 p.m.—Mutual funds are an accessible and affordable way to invest. This course will show you how to evaluate your investment objectives, research fund features, understand fund fee structures, and much more. Register by Nov. 23.

The UI Anti-Harassment Policy—9–10 a.m.—Harassment of any member of the University community is prohibited. The purpose of the Anti-Harassment Policy is to prevent harassment within the University community and to provide a process for addressing harassment if and when it does occur. Register by Nov. 24.

Dec. 4, Monday

Leaves for New Parents—10 a.m.–noon—Covers in-depth knowledge of available leaves for when a child enters the home—includes University leave policies and procedures. Recommended for Unit HR and Senior HR representatives as well as other employees with supervisory or HR responsibilities. Register by Nov. 27.

Dec. 5, Tuesday

Using Progressive Discipline—9:30 a.m.–noon—Learn The University of Iowa’s position on the recommended use of progressive discipline. The seven steps of just cause will be reviewed as well as the steps for progressive discipline, including when it would be appropriate for supervisors to discipline staff. Register by Nov. 28.

Financial Well-Being: What Every Woman Should Know—noon–1 p.m. or 6:30–7:30 p.m.—The National Center for Women and Retirement Research estimates that 80-90% of all women will be in complete control of their finances at some point in their lives. Understand how to meet the financial challenges of divorce or widowhood, financial information and terms, your risk tolerance, consider investment strategies, and learn tips for reducing taxes. Register by Nov. 28.

Jobs@Iowa—10 a.m.–noon—Learn about the recent electronic employment application (Jobs@UIOWA) and search application (Hire@UIOWA) that incorporates all aspects of filling a P&S vacancy from requisition, including complete interaction with EOD search processes. Register by Nov. 30.

Facilitation Skills for Trainers: Dealing with Resistance—1:30–3:30 p.m.—Facilitators are often asked to work with groups or teams that have difficult projects or decisions to make. This session will help you recognize the resistance often present within those groups and give you guidance to overcome it. Techniques are based on the work of Ingrid Bens, author of Facilitating with Ease. Register by Nov. 29.

Writing Effective Cover Letters—10–11:30 a.m.—Is your cover letter currently hurting or helping your resume? Learn how to create cover letters with impact that make you a quality candidate for a position! This course will cover the value of cover letters, the steps involved in writing one, and common pitfalls to avoid. Register by Nov. 30.

Traveling on UI Related Business—1–3 p.m.—Everything you need to know about UI business travel, including a review of updated travel regulations, policies, and procedures, payment options and how to process travel-related forms. Dec. 12, Tuesday

I-9's and Appointment of Foreign Nationals—10:30 a.m.–noon—Discussion of Federal I-9 requirements, University process to complete forms and acceptable documents to establish employment eligibility, and detailed review of workflow appointment procedures in appointing foreign nationals. Participants will work with document examples, the I-9 form and appointment transactions. Register by Dec. 5.

Demo of Learning Online with SkillSoft—1–2 p.m.—Hear how the benefits of SkillSoft courses can offer PC users the freedom to choose what they want to learn—whenever and wherever they want. This demonstration will show you how to log on and access courses, and give you a chance to win prizes! Register by Dec. 5.

ProTrav Training—1–2:30 p.m.—This course will provide departmental staff instruction on reconciling their UI Procurement card, as well as obtaining out-of-pocket reimbursement for travel that has been done on behalf of the University using the online application. This class will train the user on the functionality of the ProTrav application and participants will have an understanding of the concept of One Tool, One Location, One Source. Register by Dec. 5.

Dec. 13, Wednesday

Time Management and Delegation—8:30 a.m.–noon—Learn about the empowering use of time management techniques through exercises and discussion. This course provides an overview of several time management systems and also emphasizes delegation as one of the most important strategies to utilize. Register by Dec. 6.

Eye on Iowa: Old Capitol Museum Tour—12:10–12:55 p.m.—This Museum and National Historic Landmark, located on the Pentacrest, is restored to reflect the years it served as the last capitol of the Iowa Territory (1842-1846) and the first state capitol (1846-1857). In 1857, Old Capitol became the University's first building and founding place of many departments. After years on recovery from the 2001 fire, Old Capitol reopened in May 2006. Revived period rooms, three new changing exhibition galleries, and an expanded gift shop help enliven Iowa's history, culture, and heritage. Please join us for this eye-opening tour. Arrive early or stay late to visit the Gift Shop. Register by Dec. 6.

Performance Coaching—8:30 a.m.–noon—Use of effective feedback is essential in coaching employees to perform at their best. This course allows you to practice using effective feedback, and teaches you coaching skills to inspire and encourage employees. Register by Dec. 7.

Your Future Financial Game Plan—noon–1 p.m.—This educational workshop will present ideas that can be implemented to improve your financial future. Topics include portfolio investing, Group Supplemental Retirement Annuities, and planning for retirement. Register by Dec. 11.

Retirement Planning—noon–1 p.m. or 5:30–7 p.m.—Preparing financially for retirement is an ongoing and somewhat overwhelming process. This Retirement Planning course will equip you with the knowledge you need to make this task more manageable. You’ll learn how to determine your financial goals and develop a strategy to ensure a comfortable retirement. Register by Dec. 11.
