Power Plant

Since 1926, the University has operated a power plant on the banks of the
Iowa River. In 1947, the first turbine generator came online, making the
plant a combined heat and power plant that produces both electric power and
steam. Three years ago, the plant, run by UI Facilities Management, began adding discarded oat hulls to the coal it burns as a way to cut energy costs and reduce harmful emissions.
