Regents plan new search after presidential finalist withdraws

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, announced Dec. 7 that they have canceled the current search for a new University of Iowa president after one of the four finalists they had hoped to reconsider withdrew from the process.

The regents say a new search process will be discussed and developed in consultation with all UI stakeholders, donors, faculty and staff, deans, administrators, and Iowa City area community leaders “as soon as it is practical to do so.”

Once again, the University of Iowa W-2 and/or 1042-S (for nonresident aliens) forms will be available on the HR Self Service web site (http://hris.uiowa.edu/selfservice).

The IRS allows for electronic delivery of W-2/1042-S forms if permission is given; to do this, select “Stop Paper Mailings” under “My Information” on the HR Self Service site.

The 2006 W-2/1042-S forms will be available mid- to late-January 2007, and by electing electronic delivery you will have access to your form approximately one week before the forms are mailed. For more information, please refer to the Payroll web site, www.uiowa.edu/~payroll.

Register now for January learning portfolio workshop

The UI Center for Teaching would like to invite deans, department chairs, and faculty members to attend a workshop on “The Power of Learning Portfolios” by guest scholar John Zubizarreta, Jan. 11–12, on the UI campus.

The center has designed the workshop so deans and DEOs can attend the introductory portions on the morning of Jan. 11. A special session for deans and DEOs will follow the introductory presentation. Interested faculty members should register for the entire two-day session.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for deans, DEOs, faculty members, and staff to better understand how to effectively integrate learning portfolios into course and curriculum design and assessment. Zubizarreta will guide the discussion and activities through a range of topics, including:

  • the theory behind the learning portfolio concept
  • course design, active learning, and reflection
  • designing effective portfolio assignments for your students
  • assessing students’ learning portfolios
  • using the portfolio concept to build and assess curricula
  • application of the learning portfolio concept across disciplines
  • electronic portfolios

Participants will work on specific projects related to their own course or curricular needs. The Jan. 11 workshop also will provide an opportunity for deans and department chairs to discuss the challenges and specific academic and institutional contexts facing University of Iowa educators, including the use of learning portfolios to design and assess curricula.

To register, please contact the Center for Teaching at (33)5-6048; or Jean-Florman@uiowa.edu.
