Stewart brings long UI ties, history of activism to Staff Council leadership role

Duncan Stewart earned his first University-related paycheck in 1973, when he delivered the Daily Iowan for $7 a week. But his connections with the institution extend long before and after his paper-carrying days.

Stewart’s father was head of Child Psychiatry and his mother was a nurse practitioner at University Hospitals. He earned his undergraduate history degree here in 1984. His family ties with Iowa continue still: his wife, Rachel, and his two sisters, Sarah and Anne, also are University employees.

Stewart has served since 2002 as a cataloguer in the University’s Main Library and on April 1 took over for Kathy Klein as the University’s Staff Council president. fyi talked with Stewart about his plans for Staff Council, his activism, and studying the martial arts with his kids.
