International Writing Program: Four decades of providing environment for expression

When Paul Engle originally was presented with the idea of starting a program for international writers at The University of Iowa, he was a bit skeptical to say the least.

But Engle, who at that point had just retired from a quarter-century run as director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, soon warmed to the idea, and was persistent in his pursuit to give it a try. In 1967, he got his wish, and the International Writing Program was born.

Now, with a week of activities planned to celebrate the program's 40th anniversary, the IWP remains a unique project in world literature, a “United Nations of writing” that makes The University of Iowa synonymous with writing throughout the world.

University resources, programs can prevent assaults, provide support

Because of the increased sexual assaults in the Iowa City community, it is important for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community to take a proactive approach to end the attacks, according to University of Iowa President Sally Mason.

“We all have the power to reduce our risk for assault,” Mason remarked at the Women’s Safety Forum at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) on Sept. 12.

The University offers a number of resources and courses on sexual assault risk reduction, risk avoidance, and self-defense. Both men and women can use these safety tips and most of these resources.
