IWP: Four decades of providing environment for expression

But Engle, who at that point had just retired from a quarter-century run as director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, soon warmed to the idea, and was persistent in his pursuit to give it a try. In 1967, he got his wish, and the International Writing Program was born.

“You are one of the millions of people who sit at a computer all day. Every hour you have 10 minutes where you’re not doing anything productive at work, and you can’t look at porn. So you make a comment and fulfill this desire to show yourself off as a smarty-pants.”
