UI Children's Hospital ranks in the nation's top 25

University of Iowa Children's Hospital ranks among the best children's hospitals in the United States, according to a survey conducted by Parents magazine.

Parents surveyed more than 100 children's hospitals to determine where the more than 3 million American children hospitalized each year can get the best care possible. The results of the extensive survey appear in the February 2009 issue of Parents magazine, on newsstands now.

According to the survey, UI Children's Hospital is the 20th-ranked pediatric hospital in America. In addition, the pediatric emergency care provided in the Emergency Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics is rated fifth in the nation.

Energy consumption in University Services Building reduced 15 percent

Facilities Management Energy Control engineers and occupants of the University Services Building reduced energy consumption in the building by 15 percent from 2004 to 2008, incorporating simple solutions such as turning off lights and computers, installing occupancy sensors, and setting back heating and cooling controls.

The Energy Control staff, whose offices are located on the third floor of the University Services Building, were persistent in efforts to achieve this goal while maintaining the comfort of building occupants. “The control engineers were comfortable in implementing these measures in their own ‘house,’ and that proves it is possible without sacrificing comfort,” says Zuhair Mased, associate director of utilities and energy management.

This is one example of a larger effort to deploy energy conservation measures across campus in order to meet goals set forth in the UI Energy Conservation and Management Strategic Plan. Among the plan’s goals is a 10 percent reduction in energy consumption by 2010.

“If we can duplicate these efforts in other buildings across campus, we can create additional energy savings with positive outcomes for our University now and in a sustainable-oriented future,” Mased says.

University Theatres to celebrate return to Theatre Building with As You Like It

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will celebrate its return to the Theatre Building with a University Theatres Mainstage production of Shakespeare's sunny romantic comedy As You Like It, opening at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 5, in the David Thayer Theatre.

Additional performances will be at 8 p.m., Feb. 6–7 and 11–15, and at 2 p.m., Feb. 8 and 15.

The Department of Theatre Arts was flushed from the Theatre Building by the June floods. It has now become the first of the exiled UI arts departments to reinhabit its primary facility, although some parts of the building are still not in use. In addition to spaces in the Theatre Building, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and offices are located in temporary structures, and the Studio Arts building is still used for storage and the costume shop.

Tickets for As You Like It are $17 ($12 for senior citizens; $8 for UI students and youth) and can be ordered online at www.hancher.uiowa.edu/tickets.html. Any remaining tickets for each performance will be available one hour before show time at the Theatre Building box office.

24 character Kanin named after Writers' Workshop faculty member Canin

Ethan Canin is a busy guy. Acclaimed author. Faculty member at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. White House chief of staff on the FOX television show 24.

Well, at least his namesake is.

Ethan Kanin is the White House chief of staff on the new season of the allegedly real-time, action-adventure, white-knuckle-to-save-the-world series that had its season premiere earlier this month. Canin, the UI faculty member, said that the character is, indeed, named after him.

University updating procedures to reflect revisions to Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act

The U.S. Congress has updated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) through the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA). The new law is effective Jan. 1, 2009; however, federal implementation procedures are still being developed. The University is in the process of reviewing and updating employment accommodation procedures to reflect the changes.

In addition, the Department of Labor issued revised Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations effective Jan. 16, 2009. These regulations modify and clarify existing language, and expand the use of FMLA to allow employees with family in military service to take leave to care for service members injured or ill while in active service and/or for exigency purposes. This exigency leave allows qualified employees who have a spouse, child, or parent in the National Guard or Reserves who is called to active duty to take leave for qualifying nonmedical reasons related to the military activation.

Employees are encouraged to check with their HR representatives and/or the Faculty and Staff Disabilities Services (FSDS) office web site (www.uiowa.edu/hr/fsds) for more information on the ADAAA and the FMLA. The web site will be updated as additional information and implementation procedures become available.

Just appointed UI engineering coordinator of sustainability programs

Craig Just, adjunct assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate research scientist at the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research (IIHR), has been appointed coordinator of sustainability programs in the College of Engineering.

In addition to sustainability assignments in teaching, research, and service within the college, Just will work with others on campus associated with President Sally
Mason's sustainability initiative.

Just, who won a 2008 President and Provost Award For Teaching Excellence, works with students who aspire to address human development issues in resource-poor nations from a perspective of sustainable engineering. Students in his 2007 course
Design for the Developing World, for example, capped their consideration of the real-world problem of water purification by designing an electrolytic chlorine generator. Students in the 2006 class formed a nonprofit organization, Continental Crossings, and raised $20,000 to design and build a footbridge in Peru. Each spring, he assembles a team of students and guides them in choosing and executing a project that addresses a critical need in the developing community of Xicotepec, Mexico.
