Kimberly Ephgrave, professor of surgery in the Carver College of Medicine, on a recent study that shows that a significantly higher percentage of medical students suffer from depression than most young adults (Cavalier Daily [University of Virginia student paper], Feb. 2).

David Wilder, associate professor of biomedical engineering in the College of Engineering, describing spine biomechanics at a Girl Scout Badge Day event led by members of UI Women in Science and Engineering (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Feb. 23).

"I don't think it's a bad thing to spend a month and focus on the positive—there are so many negative stereotypes of African Americans in the media. But it shouldn't be limited to that."

Venise Berry, associate professor of journalism and mass communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the value of Black History Month ([Cedar Rapids] Gazette, Feb. 16).

"I suggest we humans should keep our egos in check."

Edward Wasserman, professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, quoted at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where he presented research on the mental capabilities of animals (Los Angeles Times, Feb. 12).

“In general, restraint use has gone down dramatically. Now we need to be vigilant about the places where restraint use is much higher than average."

Mercedes Bern-Klug, assistant professor of social work in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, on the use of restraints in nursing homes (USA Today, Feb. 16).

"It helps conceal the fact that he or she is an ordinary human being who is capable of making mistakes. It conceals every part of the body except the head, and we associate the head with reason and intellect."

Todd Pettys, professor in the College of Law, on robes worn by judges ([North Carolina] News & Observer, Feb. 19).
