Since July 1, smoking has been banned on the University of Iowa campus under the Smoke-Free Air Act. In response to this environmental policy change, many faculty and staff at the University have decided to try to kick the habit.
“Stopping tobacco use is extremely challenging, like any major lifestyle change,” says UI Wellness coordinator Megan Moeller. “Our health coaches work with people on a case-by-case basis to determine the best plan to help them quit.”

Tim Barrett, research scientist and adjunct professor at The University of Iowa, invited fyi to observes his teachings during his Papermaking History and Techniques course, which is taught in the new Center for the Book papermaking classroom in North Hall.

On Sept. 25, University of Iowa president Sally Mason formally responded to the Stolar Report at the Board of Regents, State of Iowa meeting in West Des Moines. Regents president David Miles then shared remarks as a response to the Stolar Report and prior to adopting a motion regarding Mason's compensation.

During the summer, you will find Mitch Swinton sitting behind a booth at the West Liberty racetrack most Saturday nights, handing out coloring books and juice boxes to kids who’ve come to watch cars zoom by on the dirt track. The University of Iowa Main Library custodian started the Lil’ Racer Car Club in 2005. The club has its own web site, collects pop tabs for Camp Courageous, and, at one point, boasted of more than 700 members. fyi managed to catch Swinton on one of his less busy days—he also tends lawns and is engaged in many civic duties when he’s not working at the University—and talked about how the club is helping children have fun and what he typically does when he has a rare day off.
