Seminar course provides snapshot of how to integrate arts and sciences in classroom

To some, combining the arts and sciences may seem a difficult task, but for one University of Iowa course, it’s the focus of the semester.

John Freyer, assistant professor in the School of Art and Art History, and Cornelia Lang, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, have teamed up for the art seminar class In Visible Light. The photography course examines the links between science, photography, and the visual arts.

Freyer and Lang—who are neighbors and friends—realized their individual art and science research overlapped in certain ways, and they decided to teach the class together.

University plans flood barrier drill, takes other precautionary measures

While Iowa City doesn’t appear to be at imminent risk of flooding based on the current weather forecast and other data, University of Iowa officials are taking precautionary measures to prepare the campus should snowmelt and rainfall once again push the Iowa River beyond its banks this spring.

One such measure is a planned HESCO barrier deployment drill scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, behind the Studio Arts building (former Menards) on Highway 6.

HESCOs—short for Hercules Engineering Solutions Consortium, which manufactures the barriers—are temporary dikes or barriers made of a collapsible wire mesh container and heavy-duty fabric liner that can be filled with sand by a front-loader, allowing for relatively rapid deployment. The barriers can be linked together or stacked.

Photo feature: Seeing the University through Center for Media Production lens

Photo Service and Graphic Service, are divisions within the Center for Media Production located in Seashore Hall. Photo Service has been serving The University of Iowa since 1915 and Graphics Services began in 1957. In 1976, Photo Service, Graphics, Audio and Video Centers combined to become the Center for Media Production. Collaborating through the years, both units provide a variety of media products, services, and advice to the University community.
