Offices and Awards

Christoph Beckermann, University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, received the TMS 2010 Bruce Chalmers Award from the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society.

John Callaghan, professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation in the Carver College of Medicine, was elected president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Deanna Carter, assistant professor of dance in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is one of only five choreographers invited to Ballet Builders 2010, which will be presented April 9–10 in New York’s Joan Weill Center for Dance in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Bruce Gantz, professor and head of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery with University of Iowa Health Care, has been appointed to the board of directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Bruce Gronbeck, professor emeritus of communication studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will be inducted to the Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame.

Alexander Horswill, assistant professor of microbiology in the Carver College of Medicine, will receive the 2010 Merck Irving S. Sigal Memorial Award from the American Society for Microbiology and the American Academy of Microbiology.

Anne Jacobsen, Hillcrest Market Place chef, scored best in the sandwich category of “The Best Mushroom Recipe Goes to Indianapolis,” a contest between Big Ten food service directors and chefs sponsored by The Mushroom Council.

David Johnsen, dean of the College of Dentistry, received the Jack Hein Public Service Award from the American Association for Dental Research.

Marilyn Kempnich, administrative arrangements coordinator in Orientation Services, recently received the Region V Orientation Professional of the Year award from the National Orientation Directors Association.

J. Bruce Tomblin, professor of speech pathology and audiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was selected to receive the Callier Prize in Communication Disorders from the University of Texas–Dallas's Callier Center for Communication Disorders.

Sherry Watt, associate professor of counseling, rehabilitation, and student development in the College of Education, became a member of the Journal of College Student Development editorial board.

Lectures and Presentations

Christopher Coffey, professor of biostatistics in the College of Public Health, presented “Design and Analysis of Small Clinical Trials” at the Lister Hill Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Md., on Feb. 24 as part of a short course titled The Science of Small Clinical Trials.

Bill Field, professor of occupational and environmental health and epidemiology in the College of Public Health, presented the keynote address, “World Health Organization’s Radon Handbook,” at the EPA Region 7 meeting on March 4; and he presented research findings on the health effects of radon exposure to the Iowa House Environmental Protection Committee on Feb 17.  Both meetings were held in Des Moines.
