Guidelines offer UI employees advice on reaping the benefits (and avoiding the risks) of social mediaOne could sum up the message found in The University of Iowa’s new social media guidelines without violating Twitter’s 140-character limit: With social media, there are many benefits, and there are risks. Be careful, and protect your privacy. The University and its employees are using social media in a variety of ways to connect with appropriate audiences, and UI Human Resources supports these uses. In spite of these uses, there are many news stories about the unintentional consequences of social media. Social media’s pervasiveness and immediacy have led University officials to create suggested guidelines for social media use in University and personal capacities in an effort to support its use while protecting privacy and reputations.
Saying thanks to Iowa Hall on its silver anniversaryThe Museum of Natural History’s Iowa Hall celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 11. Rusty the sloth, an Iowa Hall resident for all 25 years, donned a party hat for the occasion, but he left the birthday cake for everyone else. See photos from the museum, and hear the notes of gratitude written by some of Iowa Hall's young visitors.
Photo feature: Have a look at the new State Hygienic LaboratoryThe State Hygienic Laboratory at The University of Iowa held dedication ceremonies May 5 for its new building on the UI Research Park campus in Coralville. The three-story, 113,900-square-foot facility houses Iowa's environmental and public health laboratory. Funded by federal and state appropriations, the $37.75 million, state-of-the-art laboratory replaces the current lab in Oakdale Hall, which was built as a tuberculosis hospital in 1917. The Hygienic Laboratory moved to this location in the mid-1970s.
